Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Dewald Brevis made his Test debut for South Africa in the ongoing series opener against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, on Saturday, June 28. The 22-year-old impressed with a blistering half-century in his very first innings.

Coming in to bat at No. 6 with South Africa struggling at 55/4 after 22.3 overs, Brevis stuck to his natural attacking style. He reached his fifty in just 38 balls — the fastest by a South African debutant in Test cricket. It also ranks as the joint-fourth-fastest half-century by any debutant in the format.

Brevis smashed four sixes and three fours during his entertaining knock, which ended in the 37th over. He scored 51 runs off 41 deliveries. You can watch the video here:

Dewald Brevis and 19-year-old keeper-batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius stitched a crucial 95-run stand for the fifth wicket. Brevis was dismissed for 51, while Pretorius went on to score a brilliant century on debut. The left-hander became the youngest South African to register a hundred on Test debut.

He made 153 off 160 balls before being dismissed in the 65th over. It’s worth mentioning that this wasn’t Brevis’ first international appearance. He had made his T20I debut for South Africa in a 2023 home series against Australia but couldn’t make much impact, scoring only five runs in two games.

Dewald Brevis Joins CSK As Replacement In IPL 2025

Dewald Brevis went unsold at the 2025 IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. However, he was later picked by CSK as a replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh midway through the season. The promising batter played six matches for CSK, scoring 225 runs at a strike rate of 180.

He recorded two fifties, with a top score of 57 against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Despite his efforts, CSK had a poor season, winning only four of 14 matches and finishing last on the points table for the first time in IPL history.
