Explained: The Reason Behind England Fans And Players Sporting White Headbands

On Day 2 of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval in London, the England cricket team and several fans wore white headbands as a tribute to Graham Thorpe. England Cricket’s official X (formerly Twitter) account shared a photo of the playing XI, all donning headbands marked with ‘GT’ in honour of the former cricketer.

Thorpe, who featured in 100 Tests and 82 ODIs for England, tragically passed away in August 2024 after battling severe depression and anxiety, as reported by the BBC. A former Surrey player from 1988 to 2005, Thorpe’s legacy is being honoured with the tribute titled “Day for Thorpey.”

Throughout his career, Thorpe scored over 8000 runs for England and later served as part of the national coaching staff. He stepped down from that role following the 2021-22 Ashes series in Australia.

The late cricketer was appointed as Afghanistan’s head coach after parting ways with the England setup, but he never assumed the position.

England Wrap Up India’s Innings Quickly After Just 20 Runs Added On Day 2

India resumed Day 2 of the fifth Test at The Kia Oval on 204/6, with Karun Nair and Washington Sundar at the crease. However, their hopes of building a strong total were dashed early as Josh Tongue dismissed Nair for 57, followed by Gus Atkinson removing Sundar for 26, dealing an early blow to the visitors.

Making his first appearance of the series, Atkinson went on to claim his five-wicket haul by removing Prasidh Krishna for a duck. India were eventually bowled out for 224. Meanwhile, England began the day one bowler short, as Chris Woakes was ruled out of the remainder of the Test due to a suspected shoulder dislocation sustained on Day 1.

India’s batting lineup struggled on the bowler-friendly pitch, with only one batter managing a half-century and just two others reaching the 20-run mark. England currently hold a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
