India’s nightwatchman Akash Deep was dismissed after scoring his maiden Test fifty, as England finally managed a breakthrough on the third day (Saturday, August 2) of the fifth Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, being held at the Kennington Oval in London. The dismissal came on the first delivery of the 43rd over in India’s second innings.
Jamie Overton bowled a short ball targeting middle and leg, which climbed sharply. Akash Deep attempted to control the bounce and work it into the leg side but ended up offering a leading edge. Akash Deep and Jaiswal’s Century Stand Strengthens India’s Grip On 5th Test
India, after being asked to bat first, managed 224 in their opening innings. England replied with 247, gaining a slender 23-run lead. In their second outing, India lost KL Rahul (7) and Sai Sudharsan (11) early. Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, survived chances on 20 and 40 before going on to reach his half-century.
By stumps on Day 2, India stood at 75/2 in 18 overs, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 51 and nightwatchman Akash Deep on 4. On the morning of Day 3, Jaiswal continued to bat confidently, while Akash Deep showed intent and aggression, making the most of a dropped catch to register his maiden Test fifty.
The duo added a fluent 107-run partnership off 150 balls for the third wicket before Jamie Overton removed Akash Deep for 66. At lunch on Day 3, India were firmly in control at 189/3 after 44 overs, with a lead of 166 runs. Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 85, while captain Shubman Gill was on 11.
