[WATCH] Injured Chris Woakes Walks Out To Bat with One Hand And Wins Hearts

Chris Woakes demonstrated a bulldog-like spirit on the last day of the fifth Test at The Oval when one-handing his way out to bat after dislocating his shoulder making a dive to save a boundary on day 1.

The England all-rounder had been sporting a sling on his left arm for the past couple of days, and there were question marks as to whether he could bat. Woakes was the nervous man, though. As England were in a tight run chase and had just the one wicket left, Woakes made the heroic decision to come in.

Whereas the Oval crowd understood just how hard it must have been to go out in such a state to bat and were on their feet applauding uproariously. Woakes was on guard with his right hand only, and his left arm was sheathed in his jumper and hopelessly incapacitated. His appearance in the crease went under the series as one unforgettable moment.

Chris Woakes’ Unbroken Spirit

The fact that Chris Woakes is batting despite his injury was symbolic of his strength of character and will. England was out of batters, and yet they required 17 runs to win. The courage of Woakes was a replica of that of Rishabh Pant in the same series, where the Indian wicketkeeper batted despite injury. Woakes was highly commended by Joe Root who claimed that he would bat left-handedly in case it was necessitated.

Woakes brave attempt was not able to add anything to the results of this match, but it got him much respect from both the audience and those who were playing against him. EIn terms of England’s team spirit and determination, everything was present, and the Woakes’ bravery was another series high point. England was also weakened in their fight when Josh Tongue was bowled out by Prasidh Krishna with a peach of a ball, leaving England with nine men and still 17 to get.

It was a tense 2-2 tie at the end of the series, with the teams sharing the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The result in the concluding play was a just one to an exciting match where the skill, determination, and spirit of both the teams were in action.
