Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has expressed strong disapproval of former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi after the resurfacing of the infamous “Slapgate” incident involving S. Sreesanth. A video of the 2008 altercation, where Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth during an IPL match, recently went viral on social media after being shared by Modi. Harbhajan condemned the act of leaking the clip, calling it unnecessary and accusing Modi of pursuing his own interests rather than considering the impact it might have on those involved.
Speaking to Instant Bollywood, Harbhajan stated that the incident was long forgotten and should have been left in the past. “The way the video has been leaked, it’s wrong. It shouldn’t have happened. They might have a selfish motive behind it. Something that happened 18 years ago, people have forgotten, and they are reminding people about it,” he remarked, clearly upset with how the matter was reignited.
Admitting Past Mistakes
Harbhajan did not shy away from admitting his fault in the infamous clash, describing it as a painful memory and one of the lowest moments of his cricketing journey. He openly called it “an unfortunate incident” and acknowledged that his behavior had been unacceptable. Reflecting on it with humility, the veteran spinner confessed, “I made a mistake. I asked for forgiveness from Lord Ganesh. Mistakes happen.”
This public admission underlined Harbhajan’s regret for his actions and his willingness to take responsibility. Over the years, both he and Sreesanth have moved past the issue, even sharing cordial moments later on. However, Harbhajan maintained that dragging the matter back into the spotlight through such videos serves no constructive purpose, especially after such a long time.
Moving Forward, Not Backwards
Harbhajan emphasized the importance of learning from mistakes and moving forward, both as individuals and as a cricketing community. For him, the resurfacing of the video undermines the positive strides made by Indian cricket and brings unnecessary negativity. He pointed out that incidents like these should be left behind as they do not reflect the true spirit of the game or the bonds shared among players off the field.
The former cricketer concluded that while he has accepted his error and sought forgiveness, those who deliberately attempt to reignite past controversies are doing more harm than good. His strong words against Lalit Modi highlight not only his frustration at the leak but also his desire to protect the dignity of players who have long since moved past the incident.
