With the Asia Cup on the horizon, former India all-rounder and 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal has issued a strong piece of advice to India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav. Lal urged the skipper to trust the abilities of spinner Kuldeep Yadav, emphasizing that his wicket-taking skills could prove crucial in a tournament where conditions might support spin.

“Kuldeep should be trusted more. He can be a match-winner on his day, and leaving him out would be a mistake,” Lal said.

His comments come in the backdrop of recent debates over India’s squad composition for the Asia Cup. The focus on Kuldeep stems from his inconsistent inclusion in playing elevens despite being one of India’s most effective bowlers in limited-overs formats over the last year.

Shubman Gill’s Handling of Kuldeep Under Scrutiny

Madan Lal also pointed to the England series, where Shubman Gill, captaining India in the absence of senior players, did not give Kuldeep Yadav a chance in the Test lineup. This move, according to Lal, was questionable.

He remarked, “I didn’t understand why Kuldeep wasn’t played in the England series. He is in rhythm, and leaving him out only hurts his confidence.”

The former cricketer believes that young captains sometimes tend to rely on safer, defensive strategies rather than backing attacking options like Kuldeep. Lal’s remarks underline a broader debate within Indian cricket about balancing youth leadership with tactical maturity. His words also serve as a reminder to Suryakumar Yadav not to repeat the same oversight when he leads the side in a high-pressure tournament like the Asia Cup.

Concerns Over Team Selection and Outlook for Asia Cup

Another issue that raised eyebrows was the omission of Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad. Lal openly expressed his surprise, stating, “Leaving out a player like Shreyas, who has experience and proven match-winning ability, is hard to justify.”

His absence has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the tournament, with fans and experts debating the rationale behind the selectors’ decision.

Despite these controversies, Lal remains optimistic about India’s chances. He believes the team has the talent and depth to fight for glory if selections are handled wisely.

“This team is capable of winning the Asia Cup for the ninth time. They just need to play fearless cricket and back their best players,” he said.

His message to Suryakumar and the squad is clear—trust attacking options, make bold decisions, and focus on lifting the trophy.
