India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will not participate in the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies, starting October 2. The 30-year-old has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. This decision comes after he began experiencing recurring back spasms and stiffness during longer-format matches.
Iyer had undergone back surgery in the UK earlier and had been managing his recovery well, but the persistent discomfort prompted him to prioritize his long-term fitness. As a result, he will also miss the prestigious Irani Cup final between Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha and the Rest of India.
The BCCI confirmed Iyer’s decision through an official statement, noting that he aims to use this period to focus on building endurance, improving body resilience, and strengthening his overall fitness. “Mr Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket.
Having undergone back surgery and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience, and work on his fitness,” the board said.
Leadership Role in India A Despite Test Absence
While Iyer’s absence will be a significant blow to India’s Test plans, he has been given a crucial leadership role elsewhere. The BCCI has appointed him captain of the India A squad for the upcoming three-match one-day series against Australia A, beginning September 30 in Kanpur. This appointment indicates that while Iyer is stepping away from the rigours of red-ball cricket, he remains an integral part of India’s limited-overs plans.
However, his choice to step back from Test cricket could impact his future prospects in the format. With intense competition for batting spots, his absence may allow other players to cement their place in the Test lineup, making a comeback more challenging once he returns.
India A Squad for Australia Series Announced
The India A squad named for the series includes several promising talents alongside Iyer. The squad features Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge, Vipraj Nigam, Nishant Sindhu, Gurjapneet Singh, Yudhvir Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Abhishek Porel (WK), Priyansh Arya, Simarjeet Singh (for match 1), Tilak Varma (VC), Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh (for matches 2 & 3).
This series will provide a platform for emerging players to prove themselves while allowing Iyer to return to action in a less physically demanding format as he focuses on his recovery.
