Rohit Sharma has opened up for the first time after being replaced by Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain ahead of the upcoming series against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the leadership change, with Shreyas Iyer appointed as vice-captain. While Rohit and Virat Kohli have both been included in the squad, neither has been assigned a leadership role.
The decision surprised many fans and experts, especially since Rohit had led India to the ICC Champions Trophy victory in March 2025. Despite the change, Rohit showed no signs of disappointment and expressed his enthusiasm about playing in Australia, highlighting the country’s love for the sport. “I love playing against Australia, love going there, people in Australia love cricket a lot,” Rohit said during the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards held in Mumbai.
BCCI’s Reasoning Behind the Captaincy Change
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the decision and explained that Rohit had been informed in advance about the captaincy shift. Agarkar maintained a diplomatic tone when asked about the future of Rohit and Virat Kohli in India’s long-term ODI plans. “Yes. I mean that is the format they are playing at the moment and we have picked them. As far as the 2027 (ODI) World Cup is concerned, I don’t think we need to talk about it today, obviously with the captaincy change that’s generally the thought,” Agarkar clarified.
This statement hinted that the selectors are focusing on grooming young leaders for the future, with Shubman Gill’s appointment marking the start of a new phase in Indian cricket. Agarkar further emphasized that the communication between the selectors and Rohit had been professional and respectful, stating, “I mean that is a conversation between me and Rohit or us (selectors) and Rohit. But like I said, of course, it has been communicated to him.”
Focus on Consistency and Team Planning
Ajit Agarkar also shed light on the team’s broader vision, explaining why the BCCI could not continue with multiple captains for different formats. With the number of ODI matches having significantly reduced, he mentioned that maintaining three separate captains would complicate team planning and consistency.
According to Agarkar, the goal is to create a stable environment where players can adjust and prepare effectively for upcoming challenges. The selectors believe that a unified approach in leadership will help maintain focus on the team’s long-term development. As Rohit Sharma prepares to play under the new captain, fans will be keenly watching how the veteran opener contributes to India’s performance against Australia while mentoring the next generation of cricketers.
