The IPL 2026 auction is expected to take place in the second or third week of December, with December 13–15 emerging as the likely dates. According to franchise officials who have spoken with BCCI authorities, discussions are currently focused on this window, although the league’s Governing Council has yet to finalize the schedule.
At this stage, there is no indication that the auction will be held overseas, unlike the last two editions—held in Dubai (2023) and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2024). Sources from franchises suggest it wouldn’t be surprising if the BCCI opts to conduct the mini-auction in India itself, though no decision has been officially confirmed.
What is clearer, however, is that the retention deadline is November 15. By this date, franchises must submit the names of players they intend to release before the auction. There are currently no signs of significant player turnover, except possibly from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals, who finished at the bottom last season.
CSK And Royals Eye Key Player Releases Ahead Of IPL 2026
Players reportedly on CSK’s release list include Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, Sam Curran, and Devon Conway. The five-time champions already have INR 9.75 crore available in their purse following R Ashwin’s retirement. For the Royals, Sanju Samson is expected to top the release list unless the team secures a trade for their captain.
There has been speculation about releasing Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, but with Kumar Sangakkara returning as head coach, those plans may change. Other players who could be seeking new franchises include T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav, and David Miller, although nothing is confirmed yet.
Similarly, Venkatesh Iyer, the third most expensive buy in the last auction at INR 23.75 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders, may also be on the move. Among the biggest names expected to draw attention is Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. He missed the last auction due to injury but is now a hot prospect attracting interest from multiple franchises.
