[WATCH] Sai Sudharsan’s Missed Century Becomes Day 1’s Turning Point In Delhi Test

Sai Sudharsan narrowly missed a well-deserved hundred on the opening day of the second Test between India and the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Friday, October 10. The left-hander was dismissed for 87 runs off 165 deliveries, which included 12 boundaries. His dismissal came in the 69th over of India’s first innings when Jomel Warrican bowled a length delivery with a scrambled seam.

Sudharsan, caught inside the crease while trying to play across the line, was struck on the back pad as the ball spun sharply after pitching. The on-field umpire declared him out lbw. Though it appeared to be a clear decision, Sudharsan chose to review it after consulting with Yashasvi Jaiswal. The replays confirmed that the ball was crashing into the leg stump, resulting in a wasted review.

Sudharsan’s Return to Form Amid Criticism

Despite missing his maiden century, Sai Sudharsan’s innings was a strong statement of intent and form. With his 87-run knock, he returned to rhythm after a rough patch in the previous four innings, where he had scored 0, 11, 38, and 7. His composed performance against a disciplined West Indies bowling attack came at a time when questions were being raised about his place in the Indian Test squad.

“Sai Sudharsan returned to form after managing 0, 11, 38, and 7 in his last four innings,” a key highlight that silenced his critics. The 23-year-old batter showed patience, fine timing, and confidence throughout his stay at the crease, indicating his potential to become a consistent performer for India in the longest format.

India in Command as Jaiswal Shines

Alongside Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his golden run, notching up another century to put India in a dominant position. The duo forged a massive 193-run stand for the second wicket, taking full control of Day 1 in what looked like a one-sided contest. At the time of reporting, India were comfortably placed at 257/2 after 71.2 overs, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 127 and Shubman Gill batting on 5.

For the West Indies, Jomel Warrican stood out as the best bowler, claiming two crucial wickets — KL Rahul for 38 (54) and Sudharsan for 87. India, already leading the two-match series 1-0 after their innings and 140-run victory in Ahmedabad, are now aiming for a clean sweep. A series win would also strengthen India’s position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 standings, where they currently hold the third spot.
