India began the second Test against the West Indies on a dominant note at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After winning the toss, India opted to bat first. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul provided a steady start, adding 58 runs before Rahul fell for 38 off 54 balls. Sai Sudharsan then joined Jaiswal in the middle. The two left-handers built a remarkable 193-run stand for the second wicket, putting India in a commanding position.
Sudharsan scored his second Test fifty but narrowly missed his maiden hundred, getting dismissed on 87. The star performer of the day was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who continued his dream run in Test cricket. He reached yet another century and remained unbeaten on 173 at stumps, while skipper Shubman Gill was not out on 20. India closed Day 1 with 318/2 on the board after 90 overs, setting a strong foundation for a big total.
Bumrah’s Special Feat and Jaiswal’s Rising Graph
Day 1 of the Delhi Test saw several records tumble, starting with Jasprit Bumrah achieving a rare milestone. Bumrah was named in the playing XI for the second Test against the West Indies, marking his 50th Test match. With this, he became the seventh Indian cricketer to feature in 50 or more matches across all three formats.
He joined the elite group of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and KL Rahul— making it an exclusive club in Indian cricket. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s consistency at such a young age continues to impress. At just 23 years old, he already has seven Test hundreds in 48 innings. This achievement places him among the top performers before turning 24, ranking fourth on the all-time list. His rapid rise in international cricket highlights his growing reputation as one of India’s most promising openers.
Jaiswal’s Historic 150+ Record
Yashasvi Jaiswal added another chapter to his remarkable Test journey by becoming only the second Indian batter to score multiple 150-plus scores on Day 1 of a Test match in India. With his magnificent knock of an unbeaten 173 off 253 balls, Jaiswal joined Virat Kohli in this rare feat. Earlier, he had scored 179 runs on the first day against England in Vizag in 2024.
Kohli had done it twice before—151 against England in Vizag in 2016 and 156 against Sri Lanka in Delhi in 2017. Jaiswal’s 173 is now the fourth-highest score by an Indian opener on the opening day of a Test, with Wasim Jaffer still leading the chart with 192 runs against Pakistan in 2007. His innings not only solidified India’s dominance on Day 1 but also underlined his ability to perform under pressure and make history with his bat.
