With the IPL 2026 auction approaching, speculations around trades are naturally escalating. In that backdrop, a major development made headlines when reports claimed that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have shown interest in exploring a trade for all-rounder Washington Sundar.
A report in Samayam Tamil revealed that CSK initiated discussions with Gujarat Titans (GT), and the defending champions are willing to negotiate only in exchange for an all-cash deal. Sundar, who joined the Shubman Gill-led Titans in the IPL 2025 mega auction for INR 3.2 crore, has already shared dressing room space earlier with MS Dhoni and Rahul Tripathi during his stint with Rising Pune Supergiants.
The situation now hinges on how far these talks advance and whether CSK are making the right judgment call, especially when they are preparing for a pivotal season after missing the playoffs for two consecutive editions. On that note, here are three solid reasons why CSK should refrain from going ahead with a Washington Sundar trade before IPL 2026.
#1 CSK Require A Different Kind Of Batter To Complete Their Batting Architecture
Following the heavy restructuring CSK underwent during the 2025 IPL season, the team’s shape has improved, but not all concerns have been addressed. With senior players set to be released and R Ashwin retiring, CSK are expected to be very active during the upcoming auction. Most areas in their first-choice XI are reasonably balanced, but the middle order still lacks a lock-solid name to pair alongside Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube.
The uncertainty over Ruturaj Gaikwad’s batting position only adds to the unpredictability. Earlier attempts to push Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin up the order did not yield impactful results. While Sundar was occasionally asked to bat at No.4 in the Titans side, it is not necessarily a template that CSK can impose without risk.
Even if he is slotted lower, he does not possess the raw finishing explosiveness that CSK badly need now that Dhoni and Jadeja are no longer the same force in death overs. Sundar’s IPL career strike rate sits at 126.17, and although his strike rate in death overs is 159.13, the sample size is too small to rely on. CSK need a batter with deeper power-hitting credentials, not a utility batter who is still evolving.
#2 His Skill Set Is Not Optimised For The Current Chepauk Conditions
At first glance, bringing a Tamil Nadu-rooted spinner to CSK seems like a straightforward decision. However, the Chepauk surface is no longer the dry, slow turner it once was. In recent seasons, the pitch has behaved far more unpredictably, and dew has made spin less influential on some nights.
This trend became clear in IPL 2025 when wrist spinner Noor Ahmad excelled at the venue, claiming 12 wickets in six matches, while finger spinners Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin together managed only five wickets across 27 overs.
Washington Sundar himself does not boast an impressive Chepauk record in the league — across four innings at the venue, he has claimed only two wickets at 35 apiece and was trusted with a full four-over spell just once. If CSK are genuinely planning to accommodate a third spinner in their XI, the pick should be someone with a more attacking profile and better wicket-taking threat in these altered Chepauk conditions.
#3 CSK Are Better Off Preserving Funds To Address Higher-Priority Gaps At The Mini-Auction
Reports indicate GT are eyeing a pure cash trade with no player-for-player exchange. Though CSK currently possess a strong purse due to Ashwin’s 9.75 crore exit, they also have several squad vacancies to address after a major locker-room clear-out. Retaining that capital to chase immediate needs appears far more sensible. CSK still need fresh batters for the top, middle, and finishing phases to complete their batting blueprint.
Additionally, the absence of a pace-bowling all-rounder — especially with Sam Curran unlikely to return — is a strategic void that must be prioritised. There is also the unresolved crisis in death bowling: Matheesha Pathirana’s recurring injury setbacks and Nathan Ellis’ inconsistency amplify this weakness ffurther
CSK must therefore channel their purse toward correcting these major imbalance points rather than investing in a Sundar trade. For the present cycle, keeping the Washington Sundar move on hold and directing every remaining rupee to fix higher-priority roles would serve CSK’s long-term stability better than hunting for Ashwin’s immediate stylistic clone.
