Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has formally scrapped the 2025 Lanka Premier League, which was set to take place this year. The board made the announcement after the tournament dates were confirmed, establishing that the LPL will not occur in 2025 as planned. Besides, prioritizing the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 which Sri Lanka will co-host with India in February–March 2026, SLC mentioned this change in focus as the main reason for the postponement. The move is aimed to make sure that the national team is fully prepared for the big event.

The cancellation comes in the wake of SLC’s recent pronouncements that LPL’s postponement is a necessary step in making the national team’s training and scheduling for the World Cup easier. Meanwhile, the tournament has been put on hold; Sri Lanka will focus on strategic planning and team preparation for the 2026 tournament, while the fans will have to wait for further information regarding the LPL’s future. The decision signifies SLC’s endeavor to strike a balance between domestic cricket’s needs and the rigorous demands of international competition.

Sri Lanka Premier League postponed

Sri Lanka Cricket has postponed the 2025 Lanka Premier League due to the organization’s focus on preparing for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

“As per the guidelines of the International Cricket Council (ICC), all host venues for the upcoming 20-team event must be in perfect condition to meet the demands of a major international competition,” the SLC stated.

At the moment, renovation works are being carried out at the three international places on the island. The R. Premadasa Stadium (RPS) in Colombo, which briefly stopped its redevelopment to accommodate 11 matches of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, will carry on with its upgrades right after the tournament is over.

SLC underlined that the postponement of the LPL is planned and will bring about the best facilities for the T20 World Cup and Sri Lanka’s venues fitted to host cricket’s big events. The board has also said that the LPL will be repositioned in a more right time period.
