Team India all-rounder Axar Patel acknowledged a fan’s Gujarati New Year greetings during the team’s second ODI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, October 23. The moment occurred while Australia were chasing their target. The Gujarati New Year, which signifies the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2082, was observed a day earlier on Wednesday, October 22.

A native of Nadiad, Gujarat, Axar shares a strong connection with his cultural roots. While fielding near the boundary line, a few supporters shouted “Happy Diwali” to greet him, and another fan went a step further, extending Gujarati New Year wishes by saying:

“Ae bapu nava varash na Ram Ram, (Ram Ram on New Year).”

To the fan’s delight, Axar acknowledged the wishes with a warm gesture, folding his hands in response. The clip capturing the moment can be seen below:

Meanwhile, Axar Patel contributed a valuable 44 runs off 41 balls and recorded bowling figures of 10-0-51-1 in the match. However, the Men in Blue fell short, enduring a narrow two-wicket loss.

India fall short as Australia snatch series with two-wicket win in Adelaide

Australia sealed the three-match ODI series with a two-wicket victory over India in the second encounter, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead. Sent in to bat first, India posted 264/9 in their 50 overs, with skipper Rohit Sharma contributing 73 off 97 balls and Shreyas Iyer adding 61 from 77 deliveries.

Adam Zampa starred with the ball for Australia, claiming four crucial wickets to restrict the visitors. In reply, the hosts successfully chased down the target in 46.2 overs. Matthew Short top-scored with a fluent 74 off 78 balls, while Cooper Connolly guided the side home with an unbeaten 61 from 53 deliveries.

Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Washington Sundar picked up two wickets each for India. This defeat marked India’s first ODI loss at the Adelaide Oval in 17 years. With the series already decided, Shubman Gill’s team will aim to restore pride by securing a consolation win in the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 25.
