Australia’s Matthew Short has emerged from being a BBL prospect to becoming an important figure in Australia’s overhauled white-ball side. Post the 2024 T20 World Cup, he has been a consistent feature in the top order alongside Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head after David Warner’s retirement.
His well-judged 74 off 78 balls in the second ODI against India at Adelaide Oval on October 23 guided Australia to a nervy two-wicket win and sealed the series with one match to go. With the IPL 2026 mini-auction approaching, this knock significantly enhances his market value. His moderate returns in India T20Is and his first IPL stint with Punjab Kings should not be looked at harshly, as Short has undeniably evolved with time as both a batter and a part-time off-spinner.
#1 Chennai Super Kings
CSK are actively seeking an overseas top-order reinforcement due to the patchy form of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Short brings a measured mix of explosiveness and stability and can slot around Ruturaj Gaikwad and Aayush Mhatre. Chennai’s aging signings — Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Vijay Shankar — did not deliver as expected, leaving a clear gap that Short can fill.
He can also chip in with off-spin, which is valuable after Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement, though its usage may reduce with the Impact Player rule. His increasing competence against spin is vital for Chepauk; his strike rate versus spin jumped to 157.69 in 2025 from a career 127.26. Alongside Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube, Short would add another spin-hitter to fortify the batting stack.
#2 Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan must settle several uncertainties before the auction, including Sanju Samson’s future and unresolved middle-order roles. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi locked as a left-handed opening pair, the No.3 slot lacks a right-hander, especially if Samson exits. Nitish Rana and Riyan Parag were unconvincing there last season. Short fits ideally at No.3, allowing Parag and Jurel to operate at No.4 and No.5 respectively, with Rana preserved as depth.
#3 Delhi Capitals
Delhi’s batting core is unsettled with Faf du Plessis’ longevity in question, Jake Fraser-McGurk coming off a poor year, and KL Rahul oscillating between roles. Irrespective of their template, DC need a fresh, balanced top-order entry, which Short provides. Beyond batting, his part-time off-spin is an extra asset for a side that lacks an off-spinner unless Tristan Stubbs is stretched into that role. His ability to bowl to left-handers adds tactical flexibility to DC’s combination.
