Amol Muzumdar Reflects on India’s Women’s World Cup Triumph and His Journey

India’s Women’s World Cup victory has been hailed as a defining moment in the country’s sporting history, and head coach Amol Muzumdar believes it could transform the future of Indian cricket and beyond. Reflecting on the achievement, Muzumdar said, “Talking about the 1983 moment, I feel this Women’s World Cup must be a watershed moment not just for Indian cricket as a whole both men’s and women’s but a watershed moment for Indian sports.”

Drawing parallels to India’s 1983 men’s World Cup win, he highlighted how this success has the potential to inspire a new generation of players and elevate women’s cricket to unprecedented heights.

Credit to Players and Support Staff

Muzumdar was quick to share the credit for India’s remarkable triumph with the entire squad and support team. He emphasized that while the victory will be remembered for the players’ performance on the field, it was truly a collective effort. “There is no denying about that now that we have won the World Cup that the real architects are the players and also my support staff. Everyone has chipped in and done their job with great professionalism,” he noted.

The coach also stressed that the win belonged to every Indian, not just those directly involved in the campaign. “This victory is not just about players or support staff but for every Indian,” he added. His remarks reflect a spirit of unity and pride that extends far beyond the boundary lines, symbolizing how sports can unite a nation in celebration.

Moving Past Personal Regrets

Muzumdar also addressed a topic that has long followed him—his unfulfilled dream of representing India as a player. Known for his prolific domestic career, Muzumdar never got the chance to play international cricket, a fact often brought up in discussions about his career.

However, the coach made it clear that he has long moved on from that chapter of his life. “The thing about me not playing for India – I parked that thought back in 2014 when I retired. That’s history now. It’s been almost 11 years, and it remains parked there,” he said. His focus, he explained, is entirely on the team’s success and the pride it brings to the country. “This win is not about me, it’s about the team and the country,” Muzumdar concluded, expressing both humility and satisfaction in guiding India to glory.
