Pratika Rawal Opens Up on Injury and Shafali Verma’s Heroics in World Cup Final

India’s rising star Pratika Rawal has opened up about her emotional journey during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, where she had to miss the final due to injury but proudly watched teammate Shafali Verma shine on the grand stage. Speaking about the memorable win, Rawal said she “had a feeling Shafali would do something special in the final,” reflecting her deep belief in her teammate’s ability and the team’s spirit.

Injury Setback and Mental Resilience

Rawal injured her ankle and knee during India’s last group-stage match against Bangladesh, forcing her to withdraw from the squad right before the knockout stage. Her replacement, Shafali Verma, went on to deliver a match-winning performance in the final — a moment Rawal watched with pride rather than regret.

Drawing from her background in psychology, Rawal shared how it helped her cope with the emotional strain. “My education in psychology helped me accept the injury and focus on recovery instead of self-pity,” she explained. She concentrated on nutrition, sleep, and rehabilitation, turning her frustration into motivation.

She credited her family and coach Shravan Kumar for helping her through the tough phase. “My father, mother, and brother were my biggest support. They reminded me that this was just a small pause in a long journey,” she said.

Clarifying the Medal Confusion

After India’s triumph, Rawal was spotted in photos with a World Cup medal, which led to speculation online since she didn’t play the final. She later clarified that the medal she wore belonged to one of the support staff. “It was just for the picture. My own medal is on its way,” Rawal clarified with a smile, dismissing any controversy.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

Since her debut in 2022, Rawal has amassed over 1,100 runs in 24 ODIs, averaging close to 50 with two centuries and seven fifties — impressive numbers that underscore her potential. Reflecting on India’s campaign, she admitted the team faced challenges during their three consecutive losses, but the players focused on unity and self-belief. “We stopped listening to outside noise and started trusting each other more,” she said.

Now in recovery, Rawal is easing back into mobility exercises and hopes to return in time for the domestic season and the Women’s Premier League. Her determination remains firm: “I just want to come back stronger — physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
