Gambhir’s Warm Hug To Eden Curator Silences Pitch Controversy
Gautam Gambhir

A heartwarming moment unfolded at Eden Gardens as India head coach Gautam Gambhir embraced pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee, surprising many amid the intense debate around the Kolkata Test surface. The gesture came shortly after South Africa defeated India by 30 runs in the opening match of the two-Test series. The loss placed India at a 0-1 disadvantage and sparked criticism over the pitch conditions. Reports revealed that the track had not been watered for four days before the game, causing rapid deterioration by the second day.

Despite the scrutiny, Gambhir maintained a composed stance. Addressing the media after the defeat, he clarified that he held no grievances against the curator, asserting that the surface was crafted exactly as directed by the Indian team management. His public show of support during practice ahead of the second Test further reinforced this sentiment, drawing attention and admiration from fans and experts alike.

Curator Sujan Mukherjee Defends His Work

Amid the controversy, Sujan Mukherjee openly defended the preparation of the pitch. In an interaction with Times Now Bangla, he stated, “This pitch is not bad at all. I know everyone is questioning this pitch. Honestly, I know how to prepare a pitch for a Test. That’s exactly what I did. I did it as instructed. I don’t think about what others say. Not everyone knows everything. So I do my job with dedication, and I want to continue doing that in the future as well.”

His explanation highlighted that he followed instructions from the team management, suggesting that the outcome was a result of strategy rather than oversight. Mukherjee’s composed response and unwavering confidence in his work aligned with Gambhir’s perspective that the track was not responsible for India’s defeat.

Gambhir’s Assessment And India’s Road Ahead

Gambhir echoed the curator’s views, insisting that the wicket was challenging but fair. As he reiterated during the post-match interaction, “It was not an unplayable wicket, there were no demons,” emphasising that the surface demanded solid technique rather than being inherently flawed.

He further explained, “If you are willing to put your head down and if you have a solid defence, if you have a temperament, you can definitely score runs,” suggesting that India’s batting shortcomings, not the pitch, were the primary issue. With the second Test scheduled in Guwahati, India now faces a must-win scenario to level the series 1-1. The team will need to regroup quickly, adapt to new conditions, and display the resilience necessary to stage a strong comeback after a disappointing start to the series.
