Lahore High Court Adjourns Hearing in Babar Azam's Sexual Harassment Case

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam has been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for violating Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing or ground fixtures during an international match. The incident took place during the third ODI against Sri Lanka when Babar, visibly frustrated after being dismissed for 34, struck the stumps with his bat before walking off.

This act resulted in a reprimand, a fine, and the addition of one demerit point to his disciplinary record — his first offence in the past 24 months. Match officials Alex Wharf, Rashid Riaz, Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and Faisal Afridi collectively reported the breach, while match referee Ali Naqvi proposed the punishment. Babar accepted the charge and the sanction, which eliminated the need for a formal hearing. According to ICC regulations, Level 1 violations can lead to an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Details Of The Incident And Response

The moment of frustration unfolded during the 21st over of Pakistan’s innings in the final ODI of the series. After getting out, Babar reacted emotionally by hitting the stumps with his bat — an action strictly prohibited under ICC rules. The governing body later confirmed that the Pakistan captain admitted to the breach without contesting the charge. This transparency and acceptance ensured a straightforward resolution.

Despite the disciplinary setback, Babar Azam’s performance in the series was noteworthy. He amassed 165 runs, the highest by any player in the bilateral contest, and registered his 20th ODI century in the previous match. His offence, however, served as a reminder of the ICC’s emphasis on maintaining discipline and respecting on-field decorum, regardless of a player’s stature or form.

Pakistan Seal Dominant Series Victory

Despite the controversy, Pakistan wrapped up the series in commanding fashion, completing a 3-0 sweep over Sri Lanka. Chasing 212 in the final ODI, the hosts won by six wickets with more than five overs remaining. The chase began shakily with Haseebullah Khan departing for a duck, but Fakhar Zaman revived the innings with a brisk 55 off 45 balls, striking eight boundaries and forging an 80-run partnership with Babar.

Sri Lanka momentarily clawed back through Jeffrey Vandersay, who dismissed Fakhar, Babar and Salman Agha in quick succession to leave Pakistan at 115/4. However, the experienced duo of Mohammad Rizwan and Hussain Talat remained composed, stitching together an unbeaten stand that took Pakistan home. Rizwan’s fluent 61 not out and Talat’s steady 42 not out ensured a smooth finish, reinforcing Pakistan’s dominance throughout the series.
