Virat Kohli played a sensational knock against Pakistan, delivering an unbeaten 100 to steer India to a commanding six-wicket victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium. Despite his stellar performance, Kohli admitted that maintaining his intensity on the field is becoming increasingly challenging at 36.

Speaking after the match, he emphasized how crucial the upcoming week-long break is for him, allowing him to rest and recover before India’s final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2. Kohli reached his 51st ODI century off 111 balls, demonstrating his trademark cover drives and quick running between the wickets, which kept Pakistan from mounting a comeback.

Reflecting on the effort required to sustain his game, Kohli acknowledged, “At 36, it takes a lot out of me to keep putting in this level of commitment. I’m just grateful for the break now because I truly need a couple of days to rest my feet.” His comments highlight the physical demands of international cricket, particularly as he continues to set high standards for himself.

Bouncing Back in a Crucial Game

Coming into the match against Pakistan, Kohli had been struggling for runs, particularly against left-arm spinners. In his last six ODIs, he had frequently fallen to slow bowlers, raising concerns about his form. However, he seized the opportunity to silence critics with a composed and strategic innings.

He built a steady partnership, ensuring India’s chase remained on track after early setbacks. Kohli adapted his approach, focusing on controlling the middle overs, targeting seam bowlers while keeping the scoreboard ticking against spinners.

“My role was clear—to anchor the innings through the middle overs, pick my moments against the pacers, and avoid unnecessary risks against the spinners. Once we built a solid partnership, Shreyas Iyer accelerated, and I found opportunities to capitalize on loose deliveries,” Kohli explained.

His ability to adapt to match situations reinforced why he remains one of India’s most reliable batters in crucial encounters.

Keeping Focus Amid Expectations

Kohli also spoke about handling the immense pressure that comes with India-Pakistan encounters. Having played in numerous high-stakes matches, he emphasized that blocking out external noise and focusing on his own game is key to performing under pressure.

“I’ve learned to manage my game over the years. The challenge is to avoid distractions and focus on my mindset and energy levels. It’s easy to get caught up in expectations, but my job is to execute my skills for the team,” he stated.

The former captain also praised his teammates, particularly Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. He acknowledged Gill’s impressive form, highlighting why he is currently the top-ranked ODI batter. Additionally, he commended Iyer’s consistent performances at No.4, further strengthening India’s middle order.

With India securing their place in the semifinals, Kohli’s form and experience will be instrumental in the team’s pursuit of the title. His performance against Pakistan not only reaffirmed his status as one of the game’s greats but also demonstrated his unwavering commitment to excellence, even as he acknowledges the mounting physical demands of the sport.
