Kane Williamson is set to rejoin New Zealand’s Test setup as the team prepares to open its World Test Championship (WTC) series against West Indies. The former captain, who skipped the July Test tour of Zimbabwe and hasn’t appeared in a Test since December last year, has been named in a 14-man squad.

To sharpen his red-ball readiness, Williamson will feature for Northern Districts in the second round of the Plunket Shield ahead of the opening Test in Christchurch.

Alongside his return, New Zealand has also confirmed the availability of Daryl Mitchell, who has recovered from a minor groin issue sustained during the first ODI against West Indies. His fitness boosts an already stable middle order as the Black Caps look to start their WTC cycle strongly.

Fresh Faces and Bowling Reinforcements

New Zealand’s selectors have continued their faith in emerging pace talent, adding Jacob Duffy, Zakary Foulkes, and Blair Tickner to the squad. Foulkes, who delivered a stunning debut in Zimbabwe with match figures of 9 for 75 — the best ever by a New Zealand Test debutant — keeps his place after an impressive introduction. Duffy and Tickner, both familiar with international cricket through white-ball roles, now receive another opportunity to push their credentials in the longest format.

However, several notable names have been left out due to either injury or workload-managed return plans. Kyle Jamieson and Glenn Phillips weren’t considered as they continue structured pathways back to red-ball cricket. Meanwhile, Matt Fisher (shin), Will O’Rourke (back), and Ben Sears (hamstring) remain unavailable due to injuries, leaving New Zealand to rely on a mixture of experienced and emerging bowlers.

Coach Walter Praises Leadership and Form

Head coach Rob Walter expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Williamson back into the Test fold, highlighting both his on-field class and leadership value. Walter noted that the veteran batter has used his break wisely and is eager to immerse himself again in red-ball cricket.

The coach also lauded Foulkes’ outstanding debut and consistency during recent white-ball series, calling his selection “well-deserved.” He extended similar praise to Duffy and Tickner, acknowledging their experience and readiness to contribute if required.

New Zealand will open the three-match series at Hagley Oval on December 2, followed by Tests in Wellington on December 10 and Tauranga on December 18.

The squad includes Tom Latham (captain), Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Kane Williamson, and Will Young.
