Why Gill’s Return May Take Longer Than Expected?

India captain Shubman Gill’s injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata has turned out to be far more serious than what was initially believed. What was first assumed to be a routine neck spasm quickly escalated into a major concern after Gill was taken off the field and admitted to Woodlands Hospital.

He remained under medical supervision and was subsequently ruled out of the ongoing second Test in Guwahati, with Rishabh Pant stepping in as stand-in skipper. As fans hoped for a quick recovery, a new development has raised further alarm. A recent PTI report has suggested that Gill’s condition is more complex and will demand significant care before he can return to competitive cricket.

Injury Severity And Medical Update

According to the PTI update, Gill’s injury goes beyond a mild spasm and will require extended rest and rehabilitation. A BCCI source revealed that “Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series,” highlighting just how delicate the situation is.

Because of this, the team management is in no mood to take risks with their young captain’s long-term health. His unavailability has already affected India’s plans for the Test series, and medical experts have advised caution to ensure he returns only when fully fit.

Likely Timeline For Gill’s Return

Selectors are now reportedly targeting January 2026 as the most realistic window for Gill’s comeback. India’s ongoing white-ball series against South Africa ends on December 19, after which they will play New Zealand in a series of three ODIs and five T20Is starting January 11.

Should the medical assessments and rehabilitation progress as expected, Gill might return during the white-ball leg against New Zealand. However, this remains subject to continuous evaluation, with no chances being taken given the seriousness of his condition. The focus remains on a complete recovery so he can resume his role at full capacity.

Changes In India’s ODI Squad

With Gill unavailable, the BCCI has named KL Rahul as captain for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. Rishabh Pant, who recently made his return to 50-over cricket, has been appointed vice-captain. The selectors have also rewarded Ruturaj Gaikwad for his strong performances for India A against South Africa A, where he scored 117, 68*, and 25 in three games.

With both Gill and regular deputy Shreyas Iyer recovering from injuries, Gaikwad has been drafted in as additional batting depth. India’s squad includes Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (C) (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Dhruv Jurel.
