Ryan ten Doeschate, who is the assistant coach of the Indian team, is emphasizing the good that comes out of watching the past through the eyes of the present as India gets ready for the two upcoming Tests against the South Africans, the current World Test Championship holders. The first Test will be played on Friday at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Ten Doeschate, a former international player from the Netherlands, is quite optimistic about the team’s development.

The Indian batsmen will have to deal with a major test posed by the South African team which relies heavily on spin bowling. The assistant coach still counts on the batsmen not to go back to the bad habits that initially characterized their performance during the home series loss against the Kiwis last year which turned out to be very disappointing for them. The defeat was definitely not expected from India making the case of better performances even more pressing.

“I am pretty sure they will go with two seamers and three”- Ryan Ten Doeschate

During the pre-match press conference, which took place on Wednesday, Ryan ten Doeschate elucidated the point that encountering the South African team with their well-balanced blend of fast bowlers and spinners would be almost like facing a team from the subcontinent.

“They have got four (three specialists) spinners at their disposal. Most likely they will play three, and it’s a little bit like playing against a subcontinent team,” Ryan ten Doeschate said.

“You normally worry about the pace attack first, but I am pretty sure they will go with two seamers and three, if not four, spinners. That’s the challenge when you’re playing in the subcontinent—and it’s something as a team we need to get better at,” he added.

“Hopefully, we’ve learnt from the New Zealand series. We’ve put plans in place for how to play spin better. It’s going to be so important over these two games, particularly after how well South Africa bowled in Pakistan,” Ryan ten Doeschate said.

The spin bowling unit of South Africa, headed by Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, Senuran Muthusamy, and Prenelan Subrayen, has been one of their major assets in recent times. In the last Test series with Pakistan, the four bowlers took a total of 35 wickets together, which was a great contribution to the Proteas’ success in drawing the two-match series at 1-1. Among them, Harmer and Muthusamy were very effective—the latter not only scored a significant 106 runs but also received the Player of the Series award as well.
