Virat Kohli Joins Legendary Club: Equals Azharuddin's World Record

Virat Kohli held a straightforward catch as India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja dismissed South Africa captain Temba Bavuma during the third and final ODI in Vizag on Saturday, December 6. Bavuma had settled well at the crease but was unable to build on his start, departing for 48 runs off 67 balls. Jadeja’s breakthrough ended the 113-run second-wicket partnership.

The wicket fell in the 21st over of the Proteas’ innings. Birthday boy Jadeja bowled a slower delivery, floated slightly wide on length, and Bavuma attempted to drive it across his body. He mistimed the shot, producing an outside edge that went straight to Kohli at point.

Kohli celebrated with a confident flair, holding the ball aloft briefly, while Jadeja showed visible excitement after claiming the wicket. You can watch the video here:

Interestingly, this was Ravindra Jadeja’s first wicket of the three-match series. The 37-year-old will aim for a stronger performance with the ball in the remaining game. It is worth noting that Axar Patel had been preferred over Jadeja in the previous ODI series in Australia.

De Kock, Bavuma Steady SA; Kohli Nears Third Straight Century

A composed batting effort from Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma steadied South Africa after Arshdeep Singh dismissed Ryan Rickelton for a duck in the first over. At the time of reporting, the visitors were 132/2 in 23.2 overs, with de Kock unbeaten on 77 off 64 balls alongside Matthew Breetzke (4 off 5).

India had claimed the series opener in Ranchi by 17 runs, powered by Virat Kohli’s 135 off 120 balls. However, South Africa bounced back in the second ODI at Raipur, chasing down 359 to win by four wickets and level the series 1-1, with Aiden Markram contributing 110 off 98. Centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad (105) and Kohli (102) went in vain.

Skipper KL Rahul will aim to secure his second consecutive ODI series victory against South Africa, following India’s 2-1 win in the 2023 tour. Meanwhile, the Proteas are seeking their first series triumph on Indian soil since 2015/16.
