India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya opened up about the difficult mental journey he endured while recovering from a left quadriceps injury that kept him away from cricket for nearly two months. Describing the emotional challenges of being sidelined, Pandya admitted that long breaks often push a player into questioning themselves. As he put it, injuries “test you mentally”, but he remained determined not to let doubts overpower him.
Instead, he channelled his frustration into motivation, focusing on personal growth and the comeback ahead. Surrounded by supportive people, Pandya said he relied heavily on positivity and inner belief to navigate the tough phase and prepare for a stronger return to the field.
Powerful Comeback Performance Sparks Confidence
Pandya marked his return in the opening T20I against South Africa with an impressive all-round display, contributing significantly to India’s commanding 101-run win. Coming in with intent, he smashed a spirited 59 off 28 balls, showcasing aggression, clarity, and rhythm. With the ball, he backed it up with a disciplined spell, taking 1 for 16, signalling that he was physically and mentally ready for high-pressure cricket again.
Reflecting on his comeback, he revealed that throughout rehabilitation, he aimed to return “stronger, bigger, better,” emphasizing how a positive mindset plays a crucial role in recovery. Pandya stressed that he had full faith in his capabilities and trusted the process that carried him through weeks of uncertainty and hard training.
Focus on Self-Belief and Blocking Out Opinions
Discussing the pressure of expectations and public scrutiny, Pandya reaffirmed the importance of having unwavering confidence in oneself. He said, “If you don’t believe in yourself, how would others believe you?” highlighting that self-trust remains the foundation of his game.
He stated that external opinions—both praise and criticism—do not distract him, because his primary focus is on enjoying cricket and contributing to the team’s success. Pandya shared that he draws energy from the crowd and from the joy of being on the field, and these elements motivate him to improve constantly.
Looking ahead, he expressed his commitment to staying in the moment, playing freely, and continuing to evolve as an athlete. For Pandya, the journey through injury reinforced resilience, and his impactful return reflected the strength he gained during time away from the sport.
