The BCCI is preparing for an important discussion next week, as the board’s apex council gears up for its 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 22, which will be held virtually.

A major topic scheduled for deliberation is the possible revision of central contracts for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With both stalwarts having stepped away from Test and T20I cricket and now representing India only in ODIs, the board is expected to reassess their contract categories in line with their reduced formats. This review has been anticipated for some time, especially after the restructuring of India’s leadership group and the evolving priorities of the national team.

Likely Promotions and Restructuring in Player Categories

As part of the broader contract overhaul, the BCCI is also examining updates to the rankings of several current players. With Kohli and Rohit no longer active across formats, Shubman Gill, who now captains India in both Tests and ODIs, is expected to be elevated to the A+ grade, placing him alongside premier performers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja.

The AGM may bring clarity on the distribution of contracts across men’s and women’s cricket, with potential adjustments for domestic women players as well. This realignment is seen as a step toward ensuring that the board’s contract structure reflects each player’s workload, contribution, and long-term relevance in India’s cricketing plans.

Other Key Issues: Payments and Digital Upgrades

Beyond player contracts, the BCCI will also review several administrative matters during the meeting. One major point of discussion will be the remuneration framework for umpires and match referees, an area many believe requires modernisation to keep pace with the increasing demands of domestic and international cricket.

Additionally, the board is set to consider proposals related to improving the BCCI’s digital platforms, aiming to streamline fan engagement, match information, and accessibility across devices. This AGM also marks the first major gathering since the recent changes in the BCCI’s leadership, including Mithun Manhas taking over as the board’s president, making it an important moment for the new administration to set its direction and priorities.

With senior players’ contracts, domestic reforms, and operational upgrades all slated for discussion, the meeting is expected to shape several critical decisions for Indian cricket’s immediate future.
