India leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy completely outwitted South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen with a sharp googly during the ongoing third T20I on Sunday, December 14, in Dharamsala. The mystery spinner sent Jansen’s stumps flying, dismissing the tall left-hander for a single-digit score.

The breakthrough came in the 16th over of South Africa’s innings when Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav reintroduced Varun to finish his quota. Bowling a length delivery outside off, Varun drew Jansen into a defensive shot, only for the ball to sneak between bat and pad and crash into the stumps. Jansen’s stay lasted just seven deliveries, as South Africa slipped to 77 for seven.

The third T20I also witnessed Varun, the leading T20I bowler in the rankings, achieving the landmark of 50 wickets in the format.

After a poor bowling display in the second T20I at Mullanpur, the Men in Blue hit their straps right from the start in Dharamsala. India’s new-ball pair, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, made full use of the helpful conditions, leaving the South African batters searching for rhythm. The visitors slipped to 7 for 3 early on and were further pegged back at 30 for 4.

Varun Chakaravarthy emerged as the most economical bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 4-0-11-2 at an economy rate of just 2.75. Arshdeep, Rana and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two wickets each, while Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube claimed one apiece. South Africa struggled for contributions, with only three batters reaching double digits.

Aiden Markram top-scored with 61, accounting for more than half of the team’s total of 117, while Donovan Ferreira (20) and Anrich Nortje (12) were the only others to register double figures.
