At the IPL 2026 auction held in Abu Dhabi, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made headlines by securing Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green for a substantial ₹25.20 crore bid — a price that makes him one of the costliest players in the history of the Indian Premier League and the most expensive overseas signing ever in the competition.
This acquisition was not just another headline-grabbing figure; it reflected a clear strategy from KKR’s management to bolster their squad with impactful international talent. Amidst a competitive bidding scenario, especially with rivals like Chennai Super Kings pushing the price beyond ₹20 crore, KKR stayed firm and ultimately clinched Green with a ₹25.20 crore offer.
Venky Mysore’s Perspective on the Price
Following the auction, KKR CEO Venky Mysore spoke candidly about the team’s satisfaction with how events unfolded. He highlighted that securing Green was a key target for the franchise, and they remained “very happy, something we were focused on and hoping.” Importantly, he emphasized that the final number was one they could work with: “Happy with the price with which we got him.” According to Mysore, while the management was keen on adding Green to their ranks, they never became overly attached to the process.
He explained that if the bidding had continued to escalate to the detriment of their broader auction strategy, KKR would have been prepared to bow out. “If we felt it would affect rest of the auction, we would’ve let it go. Fortunately, it came within the range we were looking at,” Mysore added, indicating that the final figure fit comfortably within their planned budget.
Green’s Role and Value to the Team
Beyond just the price tag, Mysore pointed to the tangible value Green brings to KKR’s campaign. The all-rounder’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball was a major attraction, and his experience in previous IPL seasons added to his appeal. “He adds a lot to our team, especially with our new power coach Andre Russell. Very nice to have a young all-rounder,” noted Mysore, underscoring how Green’s skill set complements the team’s balance. He also reflected on Green’s familiarity with the league, noting, “Him having had IPL experience, we know what he does with bat and ball. Couldn’t be happier,” which suggests that his prior stints in the tournament give KKR confidence in his ability to perform on big occasions.
