With the IPL 2026 auction approaching, Delhi Capitals CEO Sunil Gupta has underlined that the franchise is entering the event with a well-defined plan. The JSW and GMR co-owned team narrowly missed out on a playoff spot last season, but Gupta believes the learnings from IPL 2025 have strengthened their decision-making process.
He stated that the management has already identified the areas that require reinforcement and is confident about executing its strategy. Emphasising preparation, Gupta said the franchise is “clear about our targets” going into the auction, reflecting months of internal discussions, performance reviews and scouting reports.
Strong Core and the Nitish Rana Trade
Delhi Capitals have opted to retain a solid core of players from last season, a move Gupta described as essential for continuity. He explained that while results did not always go in their favour, the team saw enough promise to build upon rather than overhaul the squad completely.
One of the major talking points ahead of the auction has been the trade that saw Nitish Rana move to Delhi Capitals from Rajasthan Royals, with Donovan Ferreira heading the other way.
Speaking on the move, Gupta highlighted Rana’s versatility and experience in the IPL, noting that he brings leadership qualities and a strong understanding of Indian conditions. According to him, Rana “fits into the roles we were looking to fill” and adds balance to the middle order, something the franchise felt was missing at crucial moments last season.
Auction Flexibility and Financial Planning
Delhi Capitals will head into the IPL 2026 auction with a purse of ₹21.80 crore and eight slots to fill, including five overseas positions. Gupta acknowledged that while the franchise has clear targets, auctions are unpredictable by nature. “You need to be flexible at the auction table,” he said, adding that teams must be ready to adapt if bidding dynamics change. He also stressed that Delhi Capitals will not hesitate to be aggressive for players who align with their long-term vision.
At the same time, the management is keen on maintaining squad balance rather than chasing big names for the sake of headlines. Gupta concluded by expressing confidence in the scouting and analytics team, stating that the groundwork has been done to ensure Delhi Capitals make smart, value-driven decisions when the auction begins.
