Nineteen-year-old Kartik Sharma was overwhelmed with emotion after being picked up by Chennai Super Kings for a massive Rs 14.20 crore at the IPL 2026 mini auction held in Abu Dhabi. Entering the auction with a modest base price of Rs 30 lakh, Kartik witnessed his value soar dramatically as franchises battled hard for his signature. The final bid not only changed his life but also made him the joint-highest paid uncapped player in IPL history, a remarkable achievement so early in his career. The young wicketkeeper-batter from Rajasthan could not hold back his tears as the bidding escalated, marking one of the most emotional moments of the auction.
“When the bidding started, I was scared I might miss out. But as the bid kept going up, I started crying,” Kartik said. “Even after it ended, I couldn’t stop. I was overwhelmed with emotion and happiness. I honestly don’t know how to put it into words,” he added, describing the intensity of the moment that unfolded in front of him.

The contest for Kartik began with the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants showing early interest, setting the stage for a competitive bidding war. Kolkata Knight Riders soon joined the race, pushing the price higher and signalling strong demand for the young talent. While the Mumbai Indians eventually stepped away, KKR and LSG continued to drive the bid up to Rs 2.80 crore.
The dynamics changed significantly once Chennai Super Kings entered the fray, with their involvement instantly raising the stakes. The price climbed rapidly, eventually touching Rs 13.20 crore when KKR decided to withdraw. At that stage, Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the bidding, adding further intensity to the contest. In the end, CSK made the decisive move, sealing Kartik’s services for Rs 14.20 crore and underlining their confidence in his potential and future value.

He shared that the joy extended beyond him, with celebrations breaking out at home as his family rejoiced in his success.
“My entire family is very happy, everyone is celebrating and dancing,” Kartik said, before expressing his excitement about joining CSK. “I’m extremely excited to play alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni and learn from him,” he added, highlighting how the opportunity to share a dressing room with the legendary former India captain makes this achievement even more special.
