Left-arm orthodox spinner Jayden Lennox has been rewarded with his first New Zealand call-up after consistent performances in domestic white-ball cricket. The selectors have included him in the ODI squad for the upcoming limited-overs tour of India in January. Lennox’s selection reflects his steady rise through New Zealand Cricket’s high-performance pathway, where he has long been identified as a player with strong potential.
Head coach Rob Walter highlighted Lennox’s development, noting that his experience with New Zealand A and his sustained domestic form made the call-up a natural progression. Alongside Lennox, several fresh faces feature in the ODI setup, underlining New Zealand’s intent to broaden its talent pool while managing senior players’ workloads.
Senior Absentees, Returns And Injury Management
The tour will see notable absences, most prominently Kane Williamson, who will miss the ODI series due to his commitments in the SA20 league. In his absence, Michael Bracewell has been entrusted with leading the ODI side, supported by an experienced leadership core including Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Will Young and Henry Nicholls.
Test captain Tom Latham will also sit out the ODIs as he remains in New Zealand for the birth of his third child, while pace spearhead Matt Henry continues his recovery from a calf injury. On the positive side, Kyle Jamieson returns to both white-ball squads, while Mitchell Santner is back in the T20I side as part of his carefully managed return from a groin issue, and he will captain the T20 team.
Squad Balance, Young Talent And T20 Focus
New Zealand have blended experience with emerging talent across both formats. Uncapped players such as Kristian Clarke, Adi Ashok, Josh Clarkson, Nick Kelly and recent Test debutant Michael Rae have been included in the ODI group, signalling a forward-looking approach. In the T20 setup, batters Bevon Jacobs and Tim Robinson return after eye-catching domestic performances, while seasoned campaigners James Neesham and Ish Sodhi rejoin the squad following stints in overseas leagues and domestic competitions.
IPL-contracted players Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes have earned selection after impressive home seasons, with Foulkes set for his first taste of T20 cricket in India. Meanwhile, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert will link up with the squad once franchise duties conclude, allowing them to feature later in the T20 series as New Zealand fine-tune preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in February.
