Rob Walter has stepped down as the head coach of South Africa’s men’s white-ball teams. According to a statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA), he resigned due to “personal reasons.” The Proteas have yet to announce his successor.
Walter was appointed in 2023 on a four-year contract, succeeding former wicketkeeper Mark Boucher. He was originally expected to lead the team through the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
“Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” Walter was quoted as saying in a statement.
“The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights, Walter added.

Rob Walter resigns as South Africa’s white- ball head coach after successful stint
During Rob Walter’s tenure as head coach, South Africa reached the final of the Men’s T20 World Cup last year, where they were defeated by Rohit Sharma’s India at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The Proteas also made it to the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup under his leadership but were knocked out by Australia at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Over his time in charge, Walter coached South Africa in 36 ODIs and 31 T20Is, guiding them to series victories against the Netherlands, Australia, Pakistan, and Ireland.
Walter’s last assignment with the team was the 2025 Champions Trophy, where South Africa fell to Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand in the semi-final at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Up next, the Proteas are set to tour Zimbabwe for a two-match Test series at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
