The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has finally addressed reports suggesting that Bangladesh could pull out of matches scheduled in India during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Speaking on the issue, BCB director Faruque Ahmed clarified that the board has formally communicated its concerns to the International Cricket Council.
He confirmed that the communication was official and not speculative, stressing that player safety remains the board’s top priority. The issue surfaced after uncertainty emerged around Bangladesh players’ security while touring India, prompting internal discussions within the board.
Player Safety and Mustafizur Rahman’s Case
The controversy intensified following reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India could not provide firm security assurances for Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman during the IPL. According to Faruque Ahmed, if the safety of even one Bangladesh player cannot be guaranteed, it naturally raises concerns about the security of the entire squad.
He explained that such situations can create mental pressure on players and their families, making it difficult for them to focus purely on cricket. Ahmed also pointed out that since the BCCI operates under the broader framework of the Indian government, the matter goes beyond cricket administration and enters the realm of diplomatic and governmental responsibility.
Request for Neutral Venues and ICC’s Pending Decision
Given the circumstances, the BCB has requested the ICC to consider shifting Bangladesh’s matches out of India if adequate safety guarantees are not provided. Ahmed highlighted that similar arrangements have been made in the past, particularly for high-risk fixtures involving geopolitical sensitivities.
He suggested that a hybrid or neutral-venue model could be a practical solution, ensuring the smooth conduct of the tournament without compromising player security.
However, sources within the BCCI have reportedly termed such a move as logistically challenging, calling it extremely difficult to rearrange venues at this stage. As of now, the ICC has not announced a final decision, but discussions are ongoing. The situation remains fluid, with Bangladesh awaiting clarity while emphasizing that their stance is driven solely by safety concerns rather than political intent.
