Team India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stated that while the management supports Sanju Samson, he has struggled to contribute runs in the T20I series against New Zealand. Since returning to the top of the order, the wicket-keeper batter has managed just 40 runs in four matches, averaging 10 with a strike rate of 142.86.
Samson was dismissed early in the first two games while trying to attack the bowlers and has been castled in the subsequent matches. With Ishan Kishan in excellent form, Samson is under significant pressure.
Kotak emphasized that the team management aims to keep Samson in a positive mindset despite the poor run of form. Ahead of the fifth T20I at his home ground, Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Samson faces a crucial challenge to secure his place for the T20 World Cup 2026.
“Sanju is a senior player. Probably he hasn’t scored as many runs as he should have. Our job is to keep him in good space. We all know what he is capable of,” the batting coach said during the pre-match press conference (via RevSportz).
Similar to Sanju Samson, Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav struggled with his batting but recently bounced back with back-to-back fifties.
“For a batter, in T20s, there will be a dry patch. Really happy that he played well over two innings,” Kotak said of the captain’s resurgence.
Sitanshu Kotak Gives Key Update On Ishan Kishan Ahead Of 5th T20I
Team India suffered a blow as in-form Ishan Kishan missed the fourth T20I in Vizag due to a minor niggle. The injury isn’t considered serious, with Kishan seen in good spirits on the sidelines and even helping carry drinks to teammates during breaks.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said there’s a good chance Kishan could play, but the final call will be made by the physios.
“Kishan will likely play. Physio will take the call,” he confirmed.
