Another Big Blow for Australia as Josh Hazlewood Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2026

Australia have suffered a major setback ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, with Josh Hazlewood officially ruled out of the tournament. The experienced fast bowler has failed to fully recover from persistent hamstring and Achilles issues, forcing the team management to take a cautious call.

Hazlewood, 35, has been sidelined from competitive cricket since November and also missed the entire Ashes series earlier in the season. Cricket Australia had earlier indicated that he would miss the opening phase of the competition, with Sean Abbott named as temporary cover, but hopes of a mid-tournament return have now faded.

Selectors Opt for Caution Over Risk

Selectors admitted they waited as long as possible before making the final decision but concluded that pushing Hazlewood back into action would be risky. Chief selector Tony Dodemaide explained the situation clearly, saying, “We were hopeful Josh would be back to match fitness by the Super Eight stage. But the latest indication is he is still some time away and accelerating his programme will carry too much risk.”

As a result, Australia have decided not to name an immediate replacement. Dodemaide added, “We will not be naming a replacement player immediately. We feel we are well covered for the initial games so will make any later decisions based on priority need at the time.” The move reflects Australia’s intent to prioritize long-term player health rather than rushing an injury-prone return.

Australia Enter Tournament Under Pressure

Hazlewood’s absence compounds Australia’s growing injury concerns. Pace spearhead and Test captain Pat Cummins has already been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a lower back injury, with Ben Dwarshuis drafted into the squad. These losses come at a troubling time for Australia, who head into the T20 World Cup 2026 low on confidence. They were recently swept 3-0 by Pakistan in a warm-up series and are currently winless in their last five T20 internationals.

Australia’s Group B fixtures will be played entirely in Sri Lanka, where they open their campaign against Ireland in Colombo on February 11. They will also face the co-hosts Sri Lanka, along with Oman and Zimbabwe. With injuries piling up and form a concern, Australia will need to regroup quickly to keep their title hopes alive.
