Rohit Sharma had a mixed campaign in IPL 2025 for the Mumbai Indians, showing glimpses of his class but lacking consistency throughout the season. While he played a few impactful innings, he couldn’t dominate consistently as an opener, which affected his overall numbers.
For IPL 2026, Rohit Sharma has focused on fitness and batting rhythm, spending long hours in the nets at the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai Indians will rely on his experience to deliver strong starts this season.
Mumbai Indians Strengthened as Jasprit Bumrah Joins Ahead of IPL 2026 Opener
Ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has joined the Mumbai Indians squad just ahead of their opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026 season against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
According to reports from The Indian Express, the 32-year-old linked up with the team on Friday evening and is set to attend his first training session on Saturday. He did not take part in Friday’s practice, as he had been directed to report to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where his workload has been closely monitored.
“He has joined the MI on Friday night, and he will be coming for practice on Saturday,” a source confirmed.
Jasprit Bumrah played a crucial part in India’s triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, earning the Player of the Final award against New Zealand. Following medical advice, he spent a few days at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to focus on strength and conditioning.
With series against Afghanistan and a tour of England coming up, the board is closely monitoring Jasprit Bumrah’s workload and staying in touch during the IPL. The pacer, who has 186 wickets for the Mumbai Indians, remains key for the season, as the team held an intense training session at the Wankhede Stadium.
Former captain Rohit Sharma, current skipper Hardik Pandya, and India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav all had extended batting sessions. Meanwhile, overseas players Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner are yet to join the squad. Notably, Mumbai Indians have not won their opening match of the IPL since 2012.
