Heinrich Malan took charge as Ireland’s head coach in 2022. During his tenure, the Irish side qualified for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and secured a memorable win over England in the tournament. They also achieved a historic milestone in 2024 by registering their maiden Test victory against Afghanistan.

“It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff and the wider Irish cricket community. My family and I have had a wonderful experience living here, and we will look back on our time involved in Irish cricket with great affection,” Malan was quoted as saying by Cricket Ireland.

The Irish side also secured their maiden home Test victory in 2024, defeating Zimbabwe in Belfast. Heinrich Malan could hardly have wished for a better farewell, as Ireland completed a stunning 2-0 whitewash over world champions India.

It marked Ireland’s first-ever win over India in an international match across all formats, as well as their maiden series victory against them. To ensure a smooth handover, Malan will work closely with the incoming head coach ahead of Ireland’s ODI series against Afghanistan in August.

Ireland Appoint New Head Coach As Malan Steps Down

Ireland has also announced a new head coach following Heinrich Malan’s departure after the historic series victory over India. Gary Wilson has been appointed to the role. A former Irish wicketkeeper-batter, Wilson represented Ireland in 292 matches across all formats before retiring in 2020, and later served as the team’s assistant coach in 2022.

The 40-year-old now becomes Ireland’s first homegrown head coach in more than three decades, since John Wills in the early 1990s. Wilson will take charge of Ireland’s upcoming five-match ODI series against Afghanistan, with Malan’s exit coming as part of a planned transition.
