The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly advised the men’s selection committee to refrain from interacting with the media amid growing speculation over Rohit Sharma’s future. Rumours about Rohit’s retirement gathered pace after India’s defeat to England in the second ODI at Cardiff, with several reports claiming that the third ODI at Lord’s could be his final appearance in the format.
However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed those claims, stating that Rohit will continue to represent India as long as he remains part of the team’s plans. According to a Cricbuzz report, the BCCI is unhappy with the information being leaked regarding Rohit’s future and has instructed selectors to avoid any form of communication with the media.
The report further stated that the situation remains fluid, with ongoing speculation making it difficult to confirm what is actually happening behind the scenes. Indian cricket is often driven by storylines, and the biggest talking point at the moment is whether Rohit Sharma will get the opportunity to realize his ambition of featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Rohit Sharma’s Poor Form Leaves Selectors Unconvinced
Rohit Sharma‘s recent form has done little to strengthen his case, with the veteran opener scoring 241 runs in eight innings at an average of 30.12 and a strike rate of 88.60. His performances have reportedly left some selectors unconvinced, with a section of the panel believing it is time to move on from the former captain.
According to NDTV, sources said that certain members of the selection committee had conveyed to Rohit, ahead of last month’s Afghanistan ODI series, that he was no longer part of their long-term plans. India head coach Gautam Gambhirwas also reportedly informed about the discussions.
Despite that, Rohit was included in the squads for both the Afghanistan and England ODI series after reportedly holding talks with senior BCCI officials. However, after registering scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs against England, the selectors are said to have reiterated their position to the veteran batter, who remains keen to extend his international career.
