Washington Sundar Ruled Out As BCCI Updates India Squad For 3rd ODI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Washington Sundar will miss the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday, July 19, after sustaining an injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harsh Dubey as his replacement in the squad.

Sundar picked up a right hamstring injury during the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, ruling him out of the remainder of the three-match series.

“He will undergo scans and seek a specialist opinion for further management of his injury,” the BCCI said in an official statement.

During the second ODI in Cardiff, Washington Sundar managed just two runs off five deliveriesbefore his innings was cut short. During a break in play, television cameras showed the all-rounder receiving treatment, with the team physio strapping his thigh.

Sundar appeared to be in considerable discomfort as he walked off the field following his dismissal. After the match, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak shared an update on Sundar’s condition, indicating that the injury appeared to be serious.

“Washington’s injury, which he had when he ran his first run to mid-off. His hamstring, I think, looks like a bad injury, and the next ball he got out,” Kotak told reporters during the post-match press conference.

Sundar had starred in the opening ODI at Birmingham, scoring an unbeaten half-century to help India chase down the target with ease. However, he was unable to make a similar impact in the second match, where England bounced back to level the three-match series.

Kuldeep Yadav Benched Amid India’s All-Rounder Approach

The current team management has preferred a playing XI packed with all-rounders, leaving Kuldeep Yadav on the sidelines. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently also questioned the wrist-spinner’s lack of opportunities in the national team.

“Come the ODI World Cup in South Africa, you will need Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. Both Axar and Washington got fifties and saw us home in the first ODI against England. But I think there will be room for only one of the two players in the future. I would love to see Kuldeep handed better treatment because he is a match-winner,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’.

India’s updated squad for the third ODI: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (Vice-Captain), KL Rahul (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav, Harsh Dubey
