Slow-over rates have been one of the most debated topics in the ongoing three-match ODI series between India and Australia. To combat the problem, former Aussie leg-spinner Shane Warne has proposed a radical solution of announcing a strict penalty for the side bowling first if they don’t get done with the overs in the time allocated.

Both India and Australia dragged the game well ahead of the allocated time in the first ODI while fared slightly better in the next game but it still exceeded the allocated time. International Cricket Council also fined India 20 per cent of their match fee after the first ODI.

Australian cricketers Steve Smith and Adam Zampa have already expressed concerns over the same. Smith, in particular, said that it felt like he was in the field forever. Reacting on the same, Shane Warne, who had blasted India for fluffing on the field, said ICC needs to be more stringent with it and observed that there had been too much loitering around.

“I think we’ve got to be really strict with it. There’s just too much meandering around. I think (a penalty of) 25 runs per over you’re down (on the allocated time).

For instance with India bowling first today, if by the allotted time they only bowled 46 overs, that’s how many overs they get to bat. So whatever the target is, you take off those overs,” Shane Warne told Fox Sports.

Meanwhile, the issue has also caught the eyes of the former cricketers and fans who have raised voice for the same. The ICC Cricket Committee members are due for a meeting shorty where they are expected to take up the slow-over rate issue seriously.
