The West Indian cricket team has won the ‘Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket Award’ in recognition of their decision to send both men’s and women’s teams on tours of England during the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was made on Thursday. The team resumed playing international cricket in July by sending a Test team to England. That was also the first cricketing assignment amid Covid-19 concerns. Unfortunately, the Jason Holder-led team lost the series 2-1.

The Windies women’s cricket team also played international cricket during the COVID-19 period as well. They played an international T20I series against England after India and South Africa opted out of a bilateral series.

“In a year when cricket has brought us much solace, it is entirely fitting that Cricket West Indies and their men’s and women’s teams should be recognised for the courage of their decision to tour England, an act which truly embodies the spirit of cricket,” MCC President Kumar Sangakkara said.

The Marylebone Cricket Club also expressed their admiration for the Pakistan, Ireland and Australian cricket teams to send their teams to England for bilateral ties amid COVID-19.

Windies Win MCC Spirit of Cricket Award

The CMJ Spirit of Cricket award was created in 2013 by MCC and the BBC in memory of the late former MCC president and BBC Test Match Special commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins, known by his initials ‘CMJ’.

Johnny Grave, the chief executive of Cricket West Indies said he was proud this latest honour recognised the efforts their teams had made “to ensure that international cricket returned safely to the global stage”.

The Windies team is currently involved in a two-Test match series against New Zealand. They are chasing a huge first innings score of 519 for 7 posted by the Kiwis. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson scored a double century.

Apart from Williamson, Tom Latham (86) and Kylie Jamieson (51) scored fifties and in the process stiched important partnerships with the Kiwi skipper. Kane Williamson now also has the second-highest runs in an innings against West Indies by a Test captain.
