Monty Panesar believes Virat Kohli has to win the T20 world cup and 2023 50 overs world cup to remain captain of team India. The likes of Rohit Sharma and now Ajinkya Rahane are putting constant pressure on Kohli the captain. Kohli has a brilliant ODI record as captain but he has failed to win any ICC Trophy in his tenure.

In 2017 champions trophy final under Kohli,  India lost to Pakistan whereas in the 2019 world cup India lost to New Zealand in the semis. Former England cricketer Panesar reckons that Kohli needs to win one ICC trophy as captain of India.

Virat Kohli now will have to start listening to other people- Monty Panesar

This year the litmus test for Kohli as a skipper is likely to be the World Test Championship final and later the T20 world cup in India. Panesar holds that if India fails to win the T20 world cup under the leadership of Kohli then he might have to step down. Monty Panesar also pointed out that captain Kohli now will have to start listening to the likes of Rohit and Rahane in the upcoming Test series against England.

“If India have a questionable series. If they don’t win the T20 World Cup, or the World Cup, because they’re both in India. I think after that Virat Kohli will have to step down. His captaincy is there but he definitely needs to win one out of the T20 or the World Cup in India”, Panesar told Sportskeeda.

“It’s an interesting debate. I think Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma’s combination works really well when they’re both given the leadership. It will be the skill of Virat Kohli to manage all the leaders now. This is going to be the next part of his captaincy”, he stated.

“He(Kohli) likes his dictatorship style but this time he’ll have to start listening to other people. There may be times during the Test series when he may have to listen to the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri, and Rohit Sharma”, Panesar added,

Meanwhile, Kohli is all set to return for the 4 match Test series against England. Even though Rahane led India to a famous Test series win in Australia, Kohli is likely to stay as skipper in the longest format for a long time. The only debate remains is for the white ball captaincy between him and Rohit Sharma who has won 5 IPL titles as captain.
