The World Cup Super League points are at stake with Ireland squaring-off against South Africa in the first of the 3-match ODI series on July 11.
The hosts Ireland are currently in the 10th place on the Super League table. Their talisman Kevin O’Brien recently retired and his absence will leave a gaping hole in the team. His shoes were expected to be filled by William Porterfield. However, he injured his finger on Saturday. But luckily, late into the day, he was deemed fit to play. Jeremy Lawlor, an uncapped player, was added to the squad as back-up. Ireland come into the series on the back of a defeat to the Netherlands. Expect them to go for a nothing-to-lose approach against the favorites.
South Africa on the other hand are at the bottom of the points table. They have several fixtures coming up ahead, with this series setting things in motion. Temba Bavuma will lead the side in what will be his second ODI series as captain. Quinton de Kock comes into this match-up following stellar performances in their 3-2 T20I victory over West Indies. While he looks in imperious touch, rest of the batsmen need to show up. Their over-reliance on Rassie van der Dussen is also an issue. The bowling attack is as strong as ever, with Anrich Nortje expected to set the marker.
