After winning back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020, Mumbai Indians'(MI) streak of the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy has finally come to end after they failed to reach the playoffs of IPL 2021 season. The defending champions finished fifth on the table after Kolkata Knight Riders’ piped them to the fourth spot on net-run rate rankings as both teams finished the league stages on 14 points each.

With four wins in seven games when the tournament was suspended, MI looked in a good position to make the final four however a terrible start the UAE leg of the IPL 2021 which saw them lose their first three games to Chennai Super Kings, KKR, and Royal Challengers Bangalore had led their departure from the competition.

Most successful cycle of MI in the history of IPL:Akash Ambani

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians were looking to make history by becoming the first team to win the title three times in a row but despite the disappointment, the team’s owner Akash Ambani said;

He does not have too much regret about how the season went.

In a video released on Mumbai Indians’ Instagram account, he said, “We will definitely remember this cycle as the most successful cycle of MI in the history of Vivo IPL. Winning back-to-back trophies in four years is no mean feat. We know what it takes to be consistent over the next 30-35 matches. And even this season, I am not going to look back at it with too much regret because we have been a very very successful franchise.”

Ambani expressed gratitude to the Mumbai squad for their services over the last four years and said they are like a family to us.

He further added:

“Thanks a lot for everything that you all have contributed to MI. It’s been an honor to have you all as a group of players and the support team too. It really does feel like a family. No matter what the future holds for each and every one of you, the family aspect of remaining with MI will always remain,” said Ambani in a heartful message.Ā
