Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer has predicted the outcome of the first Test between India and New Zealand which is underway in Kanpur. India are batting first after winning the toss on day 1. Shyeras Iyer is making his debut in red-ball cricket for India.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Wasim Jaffer said that batting will get increasingly difficult as the Test match wears on. Balls have already started showing signs of uneven bounce and turn both from the seamers and the spinners.

Kiwis Would Struggle To Bat: Wasim Jaffer

“It tells us that batting is going to get difficult and difficult from Day 2. India, I would say, would want to bat only once and anything above 350-400 [will see] New Zealand struggle. With three quality spinners and even the fast-bowlers who can use the reverse swing quite well, it’s going to get hard for New Zealand” said Jaffer.

Meanwhile, former Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori added top Jaffer’s words saying that New Zealand need to restrict India under 300 to keep themselves in the game.

“New Zealand does need to restrict India to under 300 and I think they can. The way Kane uses his bowlers and utilizes whose actually bowling well will be the key. And the fact that they have five strike bowlers, it’ll be that way where they keep rotating them and adjusting who’s bowling well and keep the Indian batsmen on guard. That’s the only thing they can really hope for – that they can keep putting pressure through [a low] economy.”

Both teams are playing with three spinners. However, it is the seamers for New Zealand who have picked the wickets. On the first day, Kyle Jamieson has looked the most impressive among the Kiwi bowlers. He has posed problems to all the Indian batters and have dismissed Shubman Gill (52), Mayank Agarwal (13) and skipper Ajinkya Rahane (35).
