The BCCI named Rohit Sharma as Virat Kohli’s successor under the most sudden circumstances. There was no prior information of the BCCI or statement or update from the Indian board on Kohli’s replacement. The decision came as a surprise to many when Rohit Sharma was named the next ODI skipper as the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the South Africa Test series.
Virat Kohli will, however, continue to lead the side in the Test format with no able replacement in the team as yet. Rohit has been elevated as the Test vice-captain with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane not being in the best of form lately.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah were targeted by Indian cricket fans on Twitter for their absurd decision on sacking Kohli. His numbers are among the best among all the captains who have led India. In 95 games as captain, Kohli has won 65 games maintaining a win percentage of over 70 percent. He lost 27 games in the meantime and won 15 out of 19 bilateral series.

Show to PAGAL GANGULY and SHAH the mistake they have made by sacking you #IndiasPrideViratKohli

Tell Ganguly to atleast have a press conference. You can't sack a senior player and expect him to be ok and perform his best

Only SRK is the one who showed Ganguly his place by droping him from KKR.

Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah have failed miserably at BCCI – communication & transparency are non existent and the controversies, politics & conspiracies are on another level. pic.twitter.com/l6oJ2VwZBE

Reacting to the same, Sourav Ganguly stated that they wanted Virat Kohli to continue as the T20I captain; however, he refused. The decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as ODI captain was just an aftermath of the decision as the board wanted a uniform leader in the white-ball format.
“It’s a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,” as quoted by ANI.
Virat Kohli will continue to lead India in the red-ball format of the game.
