Dean Elgar is all set to lead the South African side in a tough Test series against India. The Virat Kohli-led side is yet to win a Test series on African soil. However, this upcoming series is being seen as a big opportunity for the visitors. The first Test starts at Centurion from December 26.
Addressing the pre-match press conference, Dean Elgar praised ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Both have had some tough battles in the past and Elgar is expecting more of the same this time as well. Talking to Indian Express, Elgar opened up on his expected duel with Ashwin.
“Definitely, it has been a talking point. Ash is a world-class spinner. He has got the upper hand against me in India, but I have also done pretty well against him.
“We have had battles in county cricket too – the pitch I remember there was like Nagpur, I guess (laughs). The ball spun quite a bit. It doesn’t matter where you play in the world, it will be a tough battle. He is one of the best. There is a lot of mutual respect.”
The inexperienced batting line-up remains the point of focus for South Africa. With Faf Du Plessis. AB De Villiers and Hashim Amla hanging up their boots recently, the batting firepower has lacked a bit of its tooth. Elgar along with Quinton De Kock remains the two most experienced batsmen in this series for South Africa.
We Are Favourites To Win The Series: Dean Elgar
Elgar concluded by saying that he believed that his side are still good enough to win the series. India lost their last Test series 2-1 back in 2018 with Kohli at the helm.
“I think we are still the favorites going into the home series. Even though we haven’t played a lot of cricket in recent times, we have been good in what we have played. Anything can happen in Test cricket and India certainly is a very good side. Virat would no doubt want to come and beat South Africa in South Africa. This series is going to be so good. I can’t wait for it to start” concluded the Protean skipper.
