IPL 2022 Auction: Franchises Break The Bank For Ishan Kishan; Sold For A Whopping 15.25 Crores To Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians re-signed wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan for a record INR 15.25 crores on Day 1 of the IPL 2022 mega-auction.Β Earlier, Ishan was not retained by MumbaiΒ  ahead of the mega auction, instead the franchise chose to keep Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, and Suryakumar Yadav.

Multiple franchises battled for Kishan in a fierce bidding war, as expected. Kishan has now surpassed Shreyas Iyer (12.25 cr) and become the most expensive player of the 2022 auctions. Overall, the young wicketkeeper became the second most expensive Indian player ever at the IPL auctions. The only other Indian ahead of Ishan is Yuvraj Singh, who was signed by the Delhi Daredevils in 2015 for Rs 16 crores.

Even Indian teammate Ravichandran Ashwin had predicted before the auctions that Ishan Kishan can be the most expensive player at the IPL 2022 auctions. He added that Ishan is a huge asset to any side, and his wicketkeeping and batting skiils add a lot of value to any team.

“Ishan Kishan is one exciting option. But Mumbai also used him in the middle-order. So, he is a 3-in-1 package since his main dynamic of being a keeper adds a massive value. A keeper who can bat at the top, in the middle and he provides another variety of him being a left-hander as well. The general perception is that he will go for 15-17 crores. I don’t know about the exact value. But he is worth every crore that you are gonna be spending”, Ashwin had said.

Here is how twitter reacted to Ishan Kishan going back to Mumbai Indians:

Ishan Kishan first appeared in the IPL in 2016, where he played for Gujarat Lions. He has appeared in 61 IPL games and scored 1,452 runs at a strike rate of 136.34 with 9 half-centuries.
