Captain KL Rahul has been ruled out of the five-match T20I series against South Africa starting on 9th June. It’s a huge loss for the Indian team considering the quality which Rahul brings as an opener. Rishabh Pant has been named as the stand-in captain for this T20I series against South Africa.
It’s a huge moment for Pant in his cricketing career to lead the Indian team at such a young age. Several cricket fans want to see Rishabh Pant in the opening position in absence of Rahul in this series. However, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes it would be tough to see Pant at the opening position.

Wasim Jaffer said that selectors or Rohit Sharma don’t have Rishabh Pant as an opener in their plans, so it would not be wise to try something new under a stand-in captain. Jaffer said, “I don’t think so. I don’t see Rishabh Pant opening in the T20 World Cup. I don’t think that is in the selectors’ or captain Rohit Sharma’s plans.”
“I think Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan (will open) because we haven’t got anybody who’s going to be the third opener. We’ve got Rohit and KL Rahul, who are pretty much sure to open, but we are not pretty sure who is going to be that backup opener. We can try these guys and find out,” Wasim Jaffer added.
“I haven’t been able to digest it yet” – Rishabh Pant thanks BCCI for giving chance to lead the Indian team
Rishabh Pant was delighted after being named as Indian captain for this T20I series. He thanked the BCCI for giving him this opportunity. Rishabh said:
“I haven’t been able to digest it yet. I got to know just an hour ago. It is a very good feeling; it did not come under very good circumstances, but at the same time I am feeling happy.”
“I would like to thank the BCCI for giving me this opportunity to lead the Indian side. I will try to make the most out of it. Thank you to all my well-wishers for supporting me in my journey through the thick and thin of my cricketing career. I will look to make it a base and keep improving and keep making my life better and better each and every day,” he added.
