The Sri Lankan crowd cheered for the Australian cricket team after the fifth ODI on Friday, June 24 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. They thanked the visitors for touring the country during the tough economic crisis.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence in 1948. They have an acute shortage of essential items like food, medicine, cooking gas and other fuel, toilet papers, etc. Amid such turmoil, the Australian cricket team still agreed to go ahead with the multi-format tour to the island nation.
The Sri Lankan fans on Friday wore yellow jerseys and cheered for the visitors for their gestures during tough times. They carried “Thank You” boards for the Australian cricket team. The incident is being applauded and the video is being widely shared on social media.

It was pretty extraordinary: Glenn Maxwell moved by Sri Lankan crowd’s gesture
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was moved by the gesture of the Sri Lankan crowd. He expressed that it was a special feeling to have a foreign country cheer for you. Maxwell added that it was a truly extraordinary moment to witness for the Australian players.
“It was pretty extraordinary. I was just telling the boys ‘that was one of the most special feelings, being able to walk around the ground and have a foreign country all cheer for you. A lot of times when Australia tours, we are generally the enemy and there is not many Australian fans in the stands but to have the support and fans that are here at the moment is truly extraordinary,” said Glenn Maxwell as quoted by the India Today.
Australia won the fifth ODI match by four wickets, to take to the series scoreline to 2-3 in favor of the hosts. They will now play a two-match test series starting from June 29 in Galle.
